BYD Energy Storage, a part of Chinese conglomerate BYD, has launched the Battery-Box HVE, its first storage integrated system for household energy.

The Battery-Box HVE is available in two versions with capacities of 4.29kWh and 6.45kWh.

The smallest model measures 345mm x 660mm x 140mm and has a weight of 42.1kg, while the largest system has a size of 499mm x 660mm x 140mm and weighs 61.1kg.

Home energy storage systems help consumers store generated power, such as electricity or power, for when it is needed. In the UK solar storage systems, also known as solar batteries, are increasingly popular, with more than 1.3 million households having one.

In a statement, BYD, which is also the world’s biggest manufacturer of electric vehicles (EVs) said that the release of the Battery-Box HVE has been driven by increasing consumer demand for domestic energy systems.

It also stated that its design allows for  two modules to be combined in a single ‘tower’, which the company says makes it “a very flexible system design”.

Within an energy storage system, a module is made up of individual battery cells, which can be combined into larger units in a ‘tower’ for increased storage.

According to BYD, the storage system can combine four modules into one ‘tower’, which will have a maximum capacity of 23.6kWh. Furthermore, it allows for three towers to be connected in parallel, which has a total capacity of 70.92kWh.

“With up to four modules in one tower, a maximum capacity of 23.6kWh can be reached in a single-tower configuration,” the company said.

“Up to three of three towers can be connected in parallel, allowing for a total capacity of 70.92kWh – when three towers are connected in parallel,” the manufacturer said.

The storage system can be installed either on the ground or mounted on a wall, and once operational it provides “advanced intelligence” for better energy management.

Consumers can purchase the Battery-Box HVE system with either a single-phase hybrid inverter or a three-phase device.

The IP65-rated three-phase inverter has been dubbed Power-Box TH and has an output of 5kW to 15kW with maximum efficiency of up to 98.2%.

The manufacturer said this makes it very reliable and can also provide full backup functionality with 150% peak output power and a backup switch time of less than 10ms. The new products come with a 15-year warranty.

BYD said the new solution will be available from June across the European market, with an additional product due to be announced around about the same time.

BYD also recently unveiled a new charging station that enables EV cars to charge as quickly as it takes to fill a petrol car.

Super-e platform is reportedly capable of charging speeds of 1,000kW, around three times faster than most fast-charging stations. These combine a new Flash Charging Battery with new electric components that utilise a 1,000-volt architecture.

Among these, BYD announced a pair of new models capable of handling these speeds, which you can read about here. We also analyse these new EV entrants to the decline of Tesla sales.
