Lenovo has unveiled a solar-powered laptop, the Solar Power Kit for Yoga, alongside other new technology to showcase its commitment to harnessing renewable energy.

The Yoga Sola PC proof of concept is designed for those who turn any space, whether indoors or outdoors, into a productive workspace.

Speaking at MWC 2025, Jun Ouyang, senior vice president for Lenovo and general manager of the consumer segment of the Intelligent Devices Group, said it will bridge the gap between functionality and environmental awareness.

He added that it represents Lenovo’s vision of achieving a future where renewable energy and innovation are “intrinsically intertwined”.

The laptop features a solar panel with a conversion rate of more than 24%, one of the highest in the industry.

This conversion is achieved by leveraging ‘Black Contact Cell’ technology, according to Ouyang, which moves brackets and gridlines to the back of the solar cells, maximising the active absorption.

“The breakthrough Dynamic Solar Tracking system constantly measures the solar panels’ current and voltage, working with the Solar-First Energy system to automatically adjust the charger’s settings to prioritise sending the harvested energy to the system,” Ouyang explained.

“This will help to ensure maximum energy-savings and system stability, regardless of light intensity. Even in low-light conditions, the panel can still generate power, sustaining battery charge when the PC is idle.”

The innovation will allow the solar panel to absorb and convert enough direct sunlight in 20 minutes to power up to one hour of video playback on the PC.

It is just 15mm thin and weighs just 1.22kg, marking it the world’s first ultraslim solar-powered PC, and is an “important step” in realising Lenovo’s aspiration to empower a future where creating on a PC can be done anywhere the light touches.

Lenovo also unveiled a Solar Power Kit for Yoga (POC). Inspired by the same innovative vision that created the Yoga Solar PC, the Power Kit utilises Maximum Power Point Tracking (MMPT) to optimise solar energy conversion to convert every captured ray of sunlight into usable power.

The Power Kit has a detachable USB-C solar panel that can be attached to a bag, backpack, tent or tree, meaning it can be powered wherever there is sunlight for the solar panel to capture.

Jonathan Bray, head of reviews at Expert Reviews, said Lenovo has a “habit of producing wild concept laptops” but that the Yoga Solar PC “isn’t one of its craziest ideas”.

“I wouldn’t be surprised to see it, or something very similar, go on sale at some point in the next couple of years,” Bray said.

“All it appears to be doing, however, is slapping a solar panel on the lid and pairing that with some clever software to optimise charging; don’t for a moment think you’re going to be powering your laptop solely with the power of the sun.

“Lenovo says 20 minutes of direct sunlight will give you enough charge for an hour of video playback, which might sound impressive, but in my estimation that represents at most around 5% of the laptop’s total battery capacity, so while it might be good for a light top-up, you’ll still need to be plugging in your laptop on a regular basis.”
