LG stopped producing solar panels in 2022

LG was one of the most popular solar panel brands in the world

You can still find LG solar panels in the UK – for now

The solar industry has grown massively over the past 10 years, with some of the best solar panel installers in the UK offering their services.

LG played a big part in this rise, but after 12 years of manufacturing high-quality products, the company closed its solar panel business in 2022.

Here’s why the company made that decision, and what it means for LG solar panel owners.

If you want to get some of the best solar panels still on the market, pop a few details in this short form. We’ll connect you with our trusted suppliers, who’ll send you solar panel quotes for you to compare.

LG doesn’t manufacture solar panels anymore. It closed the relevant department in 2022.

The company started manufacturing solar panels back in 2010 – when solar first began to emerge in the domestic market – and was recognised internationally for its products. The company even won various awards along the way, including the Intersolar Award in 2013, 2015, and 2016.

The tech giant produced all of its solar panels in various in-house manufacturing facilities, located in Alabama, US and Gumi, South Korea.

The Alabama branch alone had a total capacity of 550 megawatts (MW) – but every manufacturing centre has closed down now.

LG said the decision to stop making solar panels was due to “uncertainties in the global solar panel business,” which centred around rising costs and increased competition.

The company explained: “LG leadership decided to exit the global solar panel business following a comprehensive review of the impact of increasing material and logistics costs, as well as severe supply chain constraints affecting the solar industry.”

LG said the move would help it “to focus on other businesses that will provide new experiences and value for our customers.”

This still includes eco-friendly products, with LG taking pains to emphasise its  green credentials.

It said: “Although exiting the solar panel business, we are strengthening our focus on groundbreaking sustainable solutions, products, and services where we can have an even greater positive impact.”

There’s a reason why LG was one of the top three most popular solar brands in Europe.

Its solar panels were efficient, long-lasting, and easy on the eyes – in the past, we’ve even included them in round-ups of the best solar panels on the market.

With efficiency rates of around 22% and a 25-year guarantee that your panels’ peak output won’t drop below 90.8%, customers could rest assured their panels would reward them with plenty of energy for years.

How long did LG solar panels last?

LG solar panels lasted between 25-30 years – with most still producing electricity long after this, just at a much lower rate.

This is why the company offered a 25-year warranty against defects, breakage, or any other product issues.

To outline how reliable its panels were, LG suggested less than 20 customers in Australia claimed on their warranties due to manufacturing faults over an eight-year period – out of the hundreds of thousands of LG panels sold in Australia.

LG solar panels costed up to £400, though this depended on the type of panel you went for, as well as the wattage.

To give you a better idea of how much they used to cost, we’ve listed some of LG’s prices below.

LG productPrice range (excluding installation cost)Warranty
NeON R£250 – £40025-year warranty
NeON 2£185 – £35025-year warranty
NeON 2 Black£225 – £37025-year warranty
NeON 2 Bifacial£215 – £34525-year warranty

If you’re tempted to get yourself an LG solar panel before they leave the market entirely, get a move on – or perhaps consider a newer model.

LG solar panels still have their warranty.

The company has said: “Homeowners and businesses chose LG solar modules for their high-quality performance backed by a trusted brand.

“We will continue to stand behind our brand and will honor the limited warranty with each product sold. Please contact your installer for warranty-related support.”

LG solar panels are still available in the UK – but you’ll increasingly struggle to find them, as distributors and installers gradually run out of stock.

If you’d still like to buy some LG solar panels, it’s worth getting them sooner rather than later.

LG helped solar panels find their space in the renewable energy industry – supplying hundreds of thousands of panels to homeowners around the world.

But as prices for materials increased and competition grew, LG decided to call it quits.

If you’re still on the hunt for the right solar panels for your home, you don’t need to give up now LG has stopped producing panels. There are tons of options out there.

Want to speed up the process of finding the perfect match? All you have to do is pop a few details in this short form. Once we hear from you, we’ll pass on your information to our trusted suppliers, who’ll get in touch with their best solar panel quotes for you to compare.
